Why generic warehouse management software gets bent out of shape
Off-the-shelf warehouse management systems are built to be sold to as many warehouses as possible, so they model storage, picking and putaway in a generic way. That works reasonably well for a straightforward single-site pallet warehouse. It works far less well once you have mixed pallet and shelf storage, batch and expiry tracking for regulated goods, customer-specific labelling, or a 3PL model where different clients need different rules applied to the same floor.
When the software does not match the operation, the operation bends around the software: pickers memorise exceptions the system does not know about, supervisors keep a side spreadsheet for the stock the WMS handles badly, and the accuracy figure you report to customers is quietly propped up by people, not by the system.

When an off-the-shelf warehouse management system is the right answer
If you run a single site with a straightforward storage layout, standard pick paths, and stock that does not need batch or multi-client logic, a configured off-the-shelf WMS is almost always the cheaper and faster route. Most established WMS vendors have solved single-site pallet and carton picking well, and there is no reason to rebuild that.
Bespoke development earns its cost when your storage model, your customer commitments or your 3PL billing genuinely do not fit a standard product, or when licence and per-user costs on the existing system have grown large enough that a fixed-cost bespoke build pays for itself. We will tell you plainly on the first call if configuring an existing product will get you further than a rebuild.

Yes, and this is one of the areas where generic WMS software struggles most. Different storage, labelling and billing rules per client can be built in cleanly rather than forced into a single-tenant model.
Do we need new scanning hardware?
Often not. We build to work with the handheld scanners or mobile devices already on your floor wherever they are capable, rather than requiring a hardware refresh as part of the project.
Can it handle batch and expiry tracking for regulated stock?
Yes, batch, lot and expiry tracking is a common requirement and is built into the picking logic so expiry-based rules are enforced automatically rather than relying on staff to check.
What does a bespoke WMS cost compared with a licensed product?
