If your asset base is straightforward, your preventive maintenance is largely calendar-based, and you do not need tight integration with a bespoke ERP or stores system, a well-configured off-the-shelf CMMS is genuinely the better choice. Established products have mature mobile apps and asset libraries, and building from scratch would waste money re-solving problems the market has already solved.
Bespoke development earns its keep when your asset structure is unusual, when spares data needs to sync tightly with an ERP that is itself bespoke, or when per-asset or per-user licensing on an off-the-shelf product has grown expensive enough that a fixed-cost build pays back over a few years.
